A dental crown is a restoration that completely caps or covers a tooth. A crown may be recommended to cover a tooth that has a large filling, has been damaged by decay, has a fractured cusp, has signs of discoloration, or has had root canal therapy.
A dental bridge is a dental restoration made up of a prosthetic tooth (or pontic) that is fused between two dental crowns. The dental crowns are custom crafted out of porcelain to resemble your natural teeth. A dental bridge is used to when one or more teeth are missing and need to be replaced.
What Are the Advantages of Dental Crowns and Bridges?
When it comes to dental crowns or bridges, most patients choose them because of their convenience and natural look. Crowns and bridges can completely restore or transform a smile, giving it a younger, more vibrant appearance.
Crowns and bridges also offer patients a functional advantage. Crowns protect damaged teeth, repairing them from the inside out and saving them from any further damage. Bridges replace missing teeth, adding more support to a patient’s smile and preventing the surrounding teeth from shifting out of place.
Procedure
For the initial diagnosis, we will carry out a thorough examination of the mouth, which will help us determine your candidacy for the restorations. Digital X-rays and scans of the mouth will be taken, which will serve as a reference for fabricating the crown or bridge. We will share these digital images with the dental laboratory, where they will be made in a few days.
Once finished, we will place the restoration on the teeth and check for a perfect fit. Crowns and bridges are bonded permanently to the teeth after a bite test confirms they are comfortable.
What Should I Expect After I Get a Dental Crown or Bridge?
- After your dental crown or bridge is placed, you may experience slight sensitivity. This sensitivity normally subsides within a few days.
- Your jaw may be sore or tender for a few days. This soreness is normal and should subside in a few days if your bite is properly balanced.
- Your dental crown or bridge will require the same daily hygiene practices as your natural teeth. Brush and floss regularly.
- Continue to schedule and attend regular dental cleanings and exams at the dentist’s office.
